<image:title>Journal + Birth Stories - Matilda’s Birth Day - I tried different positions and movement to help deal with the surges and also used the birthing ball for a bit, as well as the breathing techniques I had been practising, and your dad helped on and off with some soft touch and reassuring words, reminding me to relax my face and jaw and shoulders - he was amazing. We tried sleeping for a while and I think I got a little bit of rest, but the surges were gaining in intensity and were so close together so I didn’t get much.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal + Birth Stories - Matilda’s Birth Day - As we had specified in the birth plan there was no monitoring or exams or anything - everyone left us to have our golden time together and bathe in the joy of meeting you. You had your first feed within about an hour or an hour and a half of being born and then you fell asleep - not surprising after all the work you did being born! I did have to have some stitches around my perineum and clitoris which was surprisingly more of an unbearable pain than giving birth but I guess that is all to do with mindset. Your dad and I had a beautiful few hours with you until about 3pm when you fell fast asleep and he went to get the carseat.</image:title>
<image:caption>We were home with you for the first time by 5.30pm and Steph came over to meet you and hear all about your birth. She thought for sure I was in early labour already when we were at the party the night before, which kind of astounded me that I was in labour and didn’t realise it, and also was chatting to people about how it might be a few more weeks before you make your way into the world, when little did I know you were already on your way!</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal + Birth Stories - Bec + Pia’s Positive Home Birth - I was 41weeks on the dot when labour began. I had jumped into bed for the evening, but couldn’t get to sleep. Not unusual for me (and many other mum’s to be!) as I had a lot of insomnia in the last trimester! I was lying in bed when I felt the first surge around 10:30pm. I felt quite relieved, ready and excited. I knew it was important to stay calm to keep any adrenaline at bay and to encourage the onset of labour to progress. I thought I would try and stay in bed as long as possible until the surges became too intense. I was focusing on my breathing techniques during and inbetween each surge. I didn’t bother waking Aaron as I knew I would need him and his energy for later, anticipating a long night. However, after maybe only 20-30 minutes from when the surges began they were getting too strong and I knew I needed my TENS machine on. I couldn’t believe they were at that point already and I thought maybe I was just not handling the surges as well this time around. So I woke Aaron, he put the TENS machine on and started getting the lounge ready.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal + Birth Stories - Bec + Pia’s Positive Home Birth - As things ramped up more I asked if I could go in, the midwife said yes but if I got the urge to push I would have to squat right down in the shallow water and stay there. That didn’t appeal to me so I stayed where I was on the floor. I suddenly had the urge to push! After maybe three or four self-guided pushes, Pia was born at 1.16am on the lounge floor. The student midwife caught her and tried passing her to me between my legs but I couldn’t pull her up. I had a very short umbilical cord and could only hold her when I had turned around. She only came up to around my belly button. I held her while we did delayed cord clamping, Aaron cut the cord and we waited for the placenta to be delivered which happened on it’s own around 50 minutes later. Aaron had some skin to skin in the meantime. She weighed 8lbs 4ozs (3.8kg) and had a head of dark hair. I had a second-degree tear (which I didn’t notice at the time) so my midwife stitched me up on my bed afterwards.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal + Birth Stories - Jaimee + Marli’s Positive Home Birth - My prenatal yoga classes were so important during my pregnancy. This was my time connect with my baby. Andi was so good at helping me switch my mind off from work and totally focus on myself. I loved hearing how all the other mums were doing and what week they were. Everyone's highlights, challenges and journey were so different.</image:title>
<image:caption>Andi was also our hypnobirthing teacher. A couple of friends had told me about hypnobirthing and how much it had helped their pregnancy and birth. I was happy when I found A Calm Space. We went to a weekend course with Andi and it really empowered both of us. It was the perfect combination of practicality and positivity. We used so many of the techniques throughout the pregnancy and labour. I never attended an antenatal class so this was all the 'learning' I had. It was all I needed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal + Birth Stories - Jaimee + Marli’s Positive Home Birth - By the evening, we seemed to have a pattern so we called our friend Sophia to come over. She arrived with food for dinner and her camera. I didn't realize at the time how grateful I would be later for the cameras. She joined our little bubble and we watched some Netflix and my contractions started to intensify. It was quite funny, one minute we're chatting, a very normal movie night between friends, and the next, I'm flopped over in a surge, only to just snap back to the conversation. This was blowing Sophia's mind! I found it easier to move between the couch, swiss ball and toilet for each surge. The toilet thing is true! This little private space was key to my labour progress. At one point, I had a shower. This was amazing and gave me a chance to see how effective the TENs machine actually was. I continued to put my myself in all kinds of positions around the house and Arus and Sophia were right there, applying pressure and touch to my body and laughing at my jokes.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal + Birth Stories - Sarah + Blair’s Positive Home to Hospital Birth - To give myself the best possible chance at home I knew I should really do the Hypnobirthing course. I reached out to Andi and we met for a coffee, I really enjoyed chatting to her about pregnancy and birth. Andi has this amazing passion and holds a beautiful space for pregnant women. At the time of doing the course Jordan and I definitely thought it was good, far better than the parents centre course but it wasn’t until the day, when I think we both realised how important and how incredibly useful we found it. It gave Jordan a sense of purpose as a birth partner and he really felt prepared and educated. I found it gave me mental strength to trust the process. I used the tools I needed on the day and the one line I kept repeating in my head was ‘I will remain calm whatever turn my birth may take’. Andi went above and beyond for me in the last week of my pregnancy, she was sending me lots of articles and resources on birthing a ‘big baby’ and post due dates/induction. She was even going to come over and read through a fear release script the day I went into labour. I honestly can’t thank her enough!</image:title>

<image:title>Journal + Birth Stories - Sarah + Blair’s Positive Home to Hospital Birth - At 10pm we arrived at the hospital, Jordan was not far behind and I was wheeled into the birth room where there was just us and 5 female midwives. I instantly loved being surrounded by women. They informed me and I consented to an episiotomy, I remember asking if there was going to be pain relief but I was assured it wouldn’t hurt. With my next contraction as I pushed I felt the slightest pinch like a needle and it was done. I was moved from the ambulance stretcher to the hospital bed and knelt facing the head of the hospital bed which was at a 90degree angle. Pushing with the next contraction his head was born at 10.14 then I remember being told repeatedly and firmly get on your back, they helped turn me over to my back and I just kept pushing while two midwives helped pull him out. Baby Blair was officially born at 10.15pm and he was perfect. Once he was out it was instant relief. I had him put on my chest straight away, we had delayed cord clamping and Jordan cut the cord. Blair had some monitoring done and he weighed in at 9 pounds 7 ounces. Birth was so overwhelming, a feeling of immediate relief and I was probably in a bit of shock. I remember saying “I’m never doing that again”!</image:title>

<image:title>Journal + Birth Stories - Shamatay + Sofia’s Positive Birth - If you ask most people that know me they would say that I like to be prepared and plan. My preparation started early into my motherhood journey, from buying baby items from 12 weeks onwards to gathering resources that attempted to tell me what to expect when bubs is born. Taking into consideration my preparation mindset I knew I had to enrol my partner and I into some sort of antenatal class.</image:title>
<image:caption>Like most first time moms I enrolled ourselves into the Parent Centre course. However, I knew I wanted more of a holistic approach to motherhood and especially so with the birth of our wee girl. This brings me to our positive birth story. A story that cannot be told without giving credit to Andi Stringer ( A Calm Space) who helped us build the foundation to our empowering, positive birth story below.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal + Birth Stories - Shamatay + Sofia’s Positive Birth - I told myself that I would wait to inform my midwife because this could just be the start of a very long journey. However, things started to progress quickly and before I knew it my waters had broken(7pm) while swaying on the medicine ball. My partner suggested we contact our midwife. I started to move into ‘my zone’ and as a result it felt like I was not mentally or emotionally present in my surroundings, I was so focused on surrendering to each surge, knowing each one got me closer to meeting my baby. I listened to the hypnobirthing tracks on repeat and I kept repeating in my mind “I’ve got this”. This resulted in me not being able to communicate much at all to my partner but he knew what steps to take and how to help because our hypnobirthing course prepared him for this moment.</image:title>

      <image:title>Journal + Birth Stories - Daina + Porter’s Hypnobirth</image:title>
<image:caption>We arrived, I had one of the most challenging and what felt like the longest surge in the hallway as we were walking into the maternity ward. I could have used my breathing but honestly by this point complaining and being vocal felt better. I got up on the bed, The midwife started filling the birth pool and she checked me. I was 8cm dilated. In my head I was thinking ‘shit yes', thank god I am not wasting her time’ in fact I think I even said that. Rach, my sister arrived soon after. Her and Marty were seriously such a great team-both offering different assistance that complimented one another’s. They weren’t stagnant, they worked alongside me giving me what I needed at the time. I laughed during one surge when Rach said to me, think of it like doing a pull up...I said don’t say that because pull ups felt easy compared with what was happening at the time.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

<image:title>Journal + Birth Stories - Daina + Porter’s Hypnobirth - I knew I wasn’t progressing much in the pool. The pain became manageable, but again I think this is hormones but also Rach had this great technique that with every surge she would push down on my hips and lower back. It was a beautiful reminder that my baby is moving down, and at the same time it eased pain. After a while I was getting frustrated at myself because I knew I wasn’t doing what I needed to do. The midwife suggested I get out of the pool and have an exam to see if I was 10cm and should even be pushing.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal + Birth Stories - Daina + Porter’s Hypnobirth - There were plenty of other minor details and ones I probably can’t remember. But what I do know is; I did get the birth I planned and prepared for, the one that everyone told me you can’t be prepared for. Even if things took another turn, I had strategies up my sleeve for that.</image:title>
<image:caption>I said to Andi, I don’t think I used any Hypnobirthing strategies in my labour and birth but come to think of it, they were all of the Hypnobirthing strategies - we find our own, from the toolbox in the context we are put in.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Yoga - General Yoga Classes</image:title>
<image:caption>Hatha Flow - open class all levels Breathe, Flow, Connect The yoga I teach is accessible and tailored to support you wherever you are. There is a strong focus on creating a solid foundation with the breath. Through this connection you are able to intuitively guide yourself through your practice, choosing mindfully from the various strength options offered. The breath creates a link between the body and mind, uniting the two and creating balance. When practiced regularly over time, yoga helps you to find stillness through motion. Through practice you are able to transfer this from your mat and into your daily life.
